Rusty was found stray, wandering cold and hungry in a Wal-Mart parking lot. The Good Samaritan that found him, drove around the neighborhood, but saw no lost dog signs. She took Rusty home with her, but soon discovered her husband was highly allergic to dog dander. Rather than dump Rusty in a shelter, she contacted SCDR, and we agreed to take him. She also posted signs around and near the Wal-Mart for 3 weeks, but no one responded to the Found Dog fliers. Rusty is now available for adoption.
Upon arrival in rescue, Rusty went to our vet for a thorough examination, vaccines, and a microchip. He was already neutered. Rusty was an excellent patient and everyone at the vet?s office had nice compliments about him. In his new foster home, Rusty is being socialized. He is shy with new people, but warms up quickly. He loves to play with toys and is always ready for a good game of chase or wrestle mania with one of his fellow foster dachshunds. We don?t know if he is safe around cats.
We feel Rusty would be happiest with a family that has another mellow dog (preferably female) for canine companionship. He is a bit shy, so children should also be gentle and a bit older, about 10 years and up. Rusty wants to cuddle and enjoys sitting in any available lap. He wants to sleep in the big bed under the covers with his person, but will make do with a cushy dog bed next to the big bed. Rusty is crate trained, and his house training is coming along nicely. He needs a home with a dog door and access to a secure yard to ensure he continues practicing good potty habits.
